Srinagar, Feb 12: A constable was killed in a gunfight that broke out in Srinagar early on Monday after the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) foiled an attack on its camp in the city’s Karannagar area.

At around 4am, a guard noticed two armed men moving towards the camp. “He fired, forcing them to flee from the bylanes,” the CRPF spokesperson said.

During a search operation, some gunshots were exchanged in a nearby building. “As the militants could not enter the camp, they took refuge in some abandoned buildings nearby. The exchange of fire is on,” the spokesperson said. The CRPF’s jawan Mujahid Khan, a resident of Bihar and part of the 49 Battalion, was killed in the attack.

The latest gunfight in the border state came on the day the army was paying tributes to five of its men who were among the six people killed in an attack on its facility in Jammu’s Sunjuwan.

The CRPF camp is close to the SMHS Hospital, where militants struck on February 6. Two policemen were killed and a hardened Lashkar terrorist managed to flee from custody.

On December 31, five personnel were killed when Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad militants stormed a CRPF camp in Lethpora in Pulwama. Three militants were also killed in the strike.

Security installations have come under increased attack in Jammu and Kashmir, where the forces have stepped up the offensive.

In September 2016, Lashkar militants entered an army camp at Uri in and killed 17 soldiers, one of the deadliest attacks on a defence installation in India.

The Sunjuwan camp has been targeted twice. Two fidayeen militants had cut through barbed wires to enter the base on June 28, 2003, leaving 12 soldiers dead.
